Barkley stars as Chelsea breeze past Watford

On the back of a disappointing midweek defeat against West Ham, Chelsea bounced back in fantastic style, seeing off the Hornets in a convincing win.

Chelsea kicked off the game outside the top four following Manchester United’s demolition of Bournemouth. There was no margin for error and any slip-ups could be catastrophic.

Frank Lampard made four changes to Wednesday night’s starting eleven. Rudiger, Alonso, Kovacic and Alonso all dropped out and were replaced by Zouma, James, Mount and Giroud.

The Blues showed more urgency in the opening stages this time than they have in previous games. Olivier Giroud had the first real sight of goal but was denied by Forster.

Two minutes shy of the half-hour mark, the Frenchman got his goal. Ross Barkley brought Mount’s pass under his spell before teeing up Giroud who found the bottom corner for his fourth goal in seven league games.

The goal helped settle any nerves and Chelsea continued to assert their supremacy. Just before the interval, their lead was doubled. Etienne Capoue’s clumsy challenge on Pulisic left Kevin Friend with no option than to point to the spot.

Willian emphatically dispatched from 12 yards for his ninth league goal of the season; a personal best.

Watford became more adventurous in the second half but were unable to muster any real threat to Kepa’s goal. Their best chance fell to Danny Welbeck but he was unable to beat the Chelsea goalie.

Ross Barkley had the last say on the game as he finished into the top corner from Azpilicueta’s cross.

The win moved Chelsea back into the top four where they will hope to remain as the seasons draw to an end.
