Onana: “Time has come to take a step”

The task of signing André Onana may have just gotten easier, with the Cameroonian keeper revealing he wants to leave Ajax.

Onana told Dutch newspaper, Algemeen Dagblad: “It was five great years here. But now my time has come to take a step.”

Prior to joining the Dutch giants, Onana was in Barcelona’s youth academy. The Catalonians are one of the other clubs chasing Onana’s signature now.

If Onana is looking to be the first choice keeper at his new club, Barcelona would be a more challenging option than Chelsea.

Their current first-choice keeper is German national team keeper, Marc André Ter-Stegen.

If Onana chooses Chelsea over Barcelona, he will almost certainly enter the next Premier League season as the number one keeper. The Blues have been looking for a new goalkeeper after Kepa Arrizabalaga has struggled to live up to his price tag.

38 year old Argentine Willy Caballero and 20 year old and Englishman Jamie Cumming are the only other goalkeepers on Chelsea’s senior list.

Caballero is an able back up keeper, but nothing more.

Whereas Cumming is far from ready to be a Premier League starter.

Cumming also faces opposition for the third keeper spot from the top PL2 keepers, Karlo Žiger and Nicolas Tié.

Travis Scott.

This leaves Chelsea with the option of sticking with Kepa, or looking elsewhere.  It seems like the club are more interested in the latter.

Onana played in 33 out of 34 matches in Ajax’s Eredivisie winning 2018/19 season.

Onana has the third best goalkeeping record in the Eredivisie this season, with eight clean sheets from 24 appearances.

For comparison, this season Kepa has six clean sheets from 25 appearances.

Signing Onana is far from a forgone conclusion, however, Ajax agreeing to let Onana leave is a positive step.

If Chelsea do get their man, they will have a keeper who has spent a decade in two of Onana.Europe’s best youth developing clubs.

If he’s not yet a finished product, he can’t be too far away.
