Premier League review: Young Player of the season

Now the Premier League season is finally over, this may be the season that we look back at for youth, but who has been the best young player this season?

Every team this season has given their youth players a chance this season, with many taking their chances.

However, it has been the use of the youth at the bigger clubs that has taken fans by surprise. With the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United putting faith in their youth setups to help improve their seasons.

With that in mind, I have selected my top five young players of the Premier League season 2019/20. I have selected players who started the season under the age of 21.

1. Trent Alexander-Arnold – Liverpool

The Liverpool right-back known to the fans as ‘the scouser in our team’ has had an unbelievable season.

This has been his best season for the Reds to date. He has scored four goals and has assisted his teammates 13 times. His stand out performance this season was away at Leicester in a 4-0 win where he managed two assists and one goal.

After only turning 21 years old during the lockdown, the future looks bright for Alexander-Arnold with him already being a Premier League and Champions League winner.

2. Mason Mount – Chelsea

After a sensational season under Frank Lampard at Derby County in 2018/19, fans questioned whether he was Premier League ready.

The answer to the questions is simply yes. The midfielder has scored seven goals and registered five assists in his senior year at Stamford Bridge. Mount is the player who has benefited from Chelsea’s transfer ban the most having started 32 games this season.

After helping his side qualify for the Champions League next season and with an FA Cup final this weekend, Mount’s season could get even better.

3. Mason Greenwood – Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjær has put a lot of faith in Greenwood this season. Impressively, Greenwood has not let his manager down even at the age of just 18.

Greenwood this season became the first player since Michael Owen in 1997/98 to score 10+ goals in a season aged 18 or under. What makes that stat even more impressive is Greenwood has only started 12 starts in the league.

As a result, of these performances, United fans would be happy to start Greenwood if they failed to sign Jadon Sancho.

4. Phil Foden – Manchester City

The English midfielder has had another impressive season under Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.

His most impressive performance’s this season have come since the restart of the League in June. The youngster had scored five goals since June 17th and has found himself starting more regularly. Also, with David Silva having played his last game, the future looks even brighter.

5. Christian Pulisic – Chelsea

The American winger has taken the Premier League by storm this season. In his debut season, he had nine goals and four assists.

The most impressive thing about the 21-year old’s performances this season is he’s come into a Chelsea team featuring a lot of young players. With that in mind, he has stepped up when the team have needed him. His performances post lockdown have been nothing short of sensational.
